Oh my Porcelain!

18th October, 2011

This weekend I had tea at Maria’s.. Russian to the bones.  When she brought out the tea, I nearly fell over in excitement.. oh my porcelain! Being Russian but growing up in the US, I didn’t know about these stunning and masterful wares.

The apparently infamous Russian Imperial Porcelain also known as Lomonosov Porcelain is such a pleasure to eat & drink from.. each dish is finely hand-painted and so delicate, light as air, literally paper-thin.

Brief History:

The Imperial Porcelain Factory was established 1744 in the Town of Lomonosov in Saint Petersburg.  At this time the factory exclusively produced porcelain for the ruling Romanov family and the Russian Imperial Court.

Get the full history here.. so interesting how the factory evolved through revolutions and the Soviet Era.

While the factory produces many different designs my favorite is the most classic Cobalt Net, made with mineral cobalt, 22K gold accents and based on Catherine The Great’s dinnerware.

Kate.. Zelda.. and A Ring That Transcends Time

17th August, 2011

Of course as we all know Kate Moss just got married.. as evidence by the massive spread in this month’s Vogue.

I hadn’t really paid much notice to her ring until I saw the photos from the wedding.. and realized her ring looked vintage.. Apparently she had it custom made, modeled after Zelda Fitzgerald’s ring, the 1920′s icon and wife to American novelist F.Scott Fitzgerald.

I couldn’t find any clear shots of the ring but from what I can tell and the fact it was modeled after a 1920′s ring.. It must be in the manner of the Art Deco style which was so popular in the 1920′s and is one of our favorite here at Erstwhile and we happen to have a very similar ring up on the site now…
